Diets don’t work and I learned the hard way. Early on as a dietitian, I put people on diets hoping it would help them improve health and keep weight lower.

Do you know what I found?

Most folks felt chained to the scale rather than focusing on healthy behaviors. And, they felt so ashamed. Do you?

They thought they were a constant failure since after every diet, they just regained the weight (or more). Can you relate?

I didn’t like seeing my clients feel so awful so I thought maybe I was supporting them incorrectly. I dug into the research and you know what I found?

Diets don’t work for most people. Long term diet success was the exception not the rule. You’re not the only one.

They also don’t improve health long term and only worsen things like mood, insulin levels, and self esteem.

The diets failed. Not you.

Once I discovered this, I couldn’t un-see it. I found ways to promote health without the pursuit of weight loss: I found Intuitive Eating, Health at Every Size® approaches, mindful eating, and joyful movement. I sought training from experts in these approaches.

Fun fact about me: I have never been on a diet. At times this made me feel like a rebel in disguise and out of place. I appreciate now that not dieting happened because I was not being marginalized because of my body: I was always thin and experienced many privileges.

When I was training to become a dietitian and learning about diets it didn’t make sense to me. It felt unhealthy in my gut and heart. I remember sitting in class overhearing my cohort discuss foods they never eat. They named foods like french fries…which I just had eaten for lunch. I felt shame and anger. I was pretty sure I was healthy but they were telling me I was doing it wrong.

I tried to fit in and practice dietetics the traditional way until I realized diets hurt all of us. And, I thankfully connected with those wise experts who trained me to help the world to stop its obsession with diets and weight.

For the last 20 years I have been helping people just like you heal their relationship with food. As an eating disorder expert, I have worked with all types of eating disorders and partnered with my clients as they walked their path to Food Peace.

I would love to be your partner on your Food Peace journey.

I want to use this space to name my privileges: I am white, married, straight, small-sized, female cis-gendered, able-bodied, and raised as a Christian. I aim to be an ally to LGBTQIA+ identifying individuals and to people of all faiths, ethnicities, documentation status, abilities, races, and genders.

My Nutrition Philosophy

Your body was created with an innate wisdom. It knows how much to eat and exercise to promote health, energy and vitality. Sounds hopeful, right?!? That’s what Food Peace, the food and body healing method I created, is all about.

I want to help you get back to that wisdom through education and experiential therapies. I use only non-diet, body liberating, trauma-informed practices. Wondering what that means? I want to sit across from you, listen to what you have experienced with food and body, help you sort this all out, and help you decide what you want to do next. I don’t rush clients rather I see myself as someone that will give space to the pain you’ve experienced (and experiencing!) and permission to heal in the way you want.

One thing you won’t find: diets. I strongly dislike them and know they are harmful. Instead, I help everyone no matter their size find a way to incorporate healthy habits while healing body image.

My Nutrition Therapy includes these foundations:

  • Intuitive Eating
  • Health at Every Size®
  • Ellyn Satter approaches (fdSatter and ecSatter)

I never use diets nor promote rigid eating. The scale does not monitor progress rather mood, lab values and quality of life portray a better outlook of continued success. I want clients to experience meetings to be nonjudgemental and compassionate with permission to heal on your their own terms. The supportive environment provides a special space free of body judgment and food policing. Instead, all clients have unconditional permission to eat what is pleasurable in their present body no matter the size.
